“Why WRAP?” is a very good question, especially when brands and retailers (buyers) have a variety of different ways to implement social compliance programs within their supply chains. Naturally, we here at WRAP believe we have a truly wonderful program that can help many stakeholders gain greater insights into and control over their supply chains in a cost and resource efficient way. Chief among the reasons for tapping into the WRAP program are:

1. Systemic & Collaborative Approach
WRAP takes a management systems approach to social compliance and sustainability. Our Certification Program independently monitors and certifies compliance with the 12 WRAP Principles, which are based on the rule of law within each country and include the spirit or language of relevant International Labor Organization conventions. While no audit can guarantee 100% compliance 100% of the time, WRAP certified factories are less likely to have problems because our approach requires that they must do much more than simply pass an audit.
We engage with facilities to build relationships, taking a collaborative approach to social compliance certification. We work with the facilities to ensure that they remain in compliance with the 12 Principles. All facilities need to actively engage in the process themselves and maintain effective management systems to ensure compliance requirements are met. This requires real commitment from top management and that specific individuals are assigned responsibility for compliance with each of the 12 Principles. Beyond simply addressing issues in CAPs (corrective action plans), the facility must demonstrate how the principles are adopted, deployed, and monitored and maintain relevant supporting evidence. There also must be continuous education of all employees in order to ensure ongoing (not just one-time) compliance. Even buyers that do not accept certifications generally recognize that the process to become certified implies that the facility has been evaluated and received counseling and training to become a better facility.
2. Cost Effective Expertise
That systematic and collaborative approach also can translate into cost effective resources. As a mission-driven, non-profit organization with experienced compliance personnel who are dedicated to promoting safe, lawful, humane and ethical manufacturing around the world, WRAP can help minimize cost expenditures for both auditing and training initiatives. Buyers who accept WRAP certifications (for part or all of their programs) can minimize the costs of having to create, staff, and manage their own programs. Similarly, our training programs can help cost effectively build capacity for both in-house compliance teams and factory compliance personnel. Since WRAP certified factories are less likely to have problems, this too can minimize costs of having to correct continuing non-compliances.
3. Credibility & Dependability
Now in our fifteenth year, WRAP is well established, and we have been making many improvements over the past couple of years as we seek to further improve the program… and enhancements are ongoing, such as:
- Increasing WRAP’s own internal audit staff further and doing even more post-certification follow-up audits (at no cost to the factories)
- Adding more full-time local staff in key sourcing destinations
- Expanding efforts to support factory transparency, such as increasing after-hours observations in certain countries and regions to verify that factories actually are operating according to the hours that they reported, thereby holding them accountable and helping them to realize the benefits of being transparent
Finally, WRAP strives to be a responsive and effective partner with its stakeholders to help ensure that factories are safe places to work and that supply chains are socially compliant.
