Each year, on October 7, World Cotton Day celebrates one of the world’s most important natural fibers: cotton. It sustains livelihoods, supports industries, and connects producers and consumers across the globe. For those of us working in responsible production, this day is an opportunity to reflect not only on cotton’s economic impact but also on its environmental footprint and, more importantly, on how we can make its story more sustainable.

Cotton has an inescapable environmental dimension. It is both resilient and resource intensive. It provides income for millions of smallholder farmers, processing units, and garment manufacturers, but its cultivation often involves high water use and pesticide dependency. Unsustainable practices can strain ecosystems, while responsible farming and processing can make cotton one of the most eco-friendly fibers in the industry.

At Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production (WRAP), we view environmental responsibility as an integral part of ethical manufacturing. Principle 10: Environment, within WRAP’s 12 Grundsätze, reminds us that factories must comply with environmental laws, manage their resources responsibly, and adopt measures that minimize ecological impacts. When applied to cotton-based production, this principle helps guide manufacturers toward applying the concepts of reduce, recycle and reuse.

WRAP recognizes that environmental sustainability goes beyond certifications. It thrives through awareness and accountability. Through our training and engagement programs, we support factories in implementing environmental management systems, reducing waste, and adopting conscious practices to protect the nature. This commitment empowers manufacturers to align with global environmental standards and to become stewards of sustainability in their regions.

World Cotton Day is a reminder that ethical production doesn’t end at the factory gate. Each link in the cotton chain—from farmer to fiber to finished garment—has a role in environmental protection. By encouraging collaboration among producers, manufacturers, and brands, WRAP contributes to a culture where responsible sourcing is not an obligation but a shared value.
